Soul Yin
Formerly known as DJ Yin, Soul Yin whose real name is Oyin Asu-Johnson is a Nigerian entertainer who boasts of being a recording artiste and a professional disc jockey. Influenced by her DJ father while growing up, she became interested in the art and decided to walk down the turntable path under the tutelage of Nigeria’s foremost disc jockey, DJ Jimmy Jatt. Soul Yin has come to blossom in this field in the last 4 years, performing at notable events in Nigeria including Menta De Moda and Grill At The Pent (G.A.T.P).
However, singing was always her first love and she continuously desired to become a recording artiste. Partnering with Bankyondbeatz, she realized this dream, featuring on Heart Desire – a track off the young producer’s highly rated Fuego Senoras EP, released in January 2017.
Her impressive vocals on the song triggered a wide reception of the track, bringing her evident talent to the fore. The media buzz soon followed as the song grabbed heavy radio rotation, notching a huge recognition on the biggest music radio station in the country; The Beat 99.9 FM – after listeners voted it the ‘Fresh Beats Song of the Week.’ Soul Yin and her collaborator, Bankyondbeatz went on to be voted The BEAT 97.9 FM’s Fresh Beats Artistes of the Week.
The recognition didn’t stop there for the professional DJ/artiste as respected industry heavyweights such as Ovie O of NotJustOk, Bizzle Osikoya of The Plug, top-rated artistes Mr Eazi and Ycee amongst other declared their admiration for her effort on the song.
Firing on, she served yet another delightful feature in early March 2017, when she collaborated with fast rising rapper, Ozzy B/Santi on “Beat It Up” alongside Tay Iwar. The Bankyondbeatz-produced has gone on to be a fan favourite in alternative music circles and finding its way on charts across various music streaming platforms.
On March 22, 2017, she released her debut single titled What You Started. The EDM/Afrohouse romantic number instantly struck a chord with her increasing fan base, grabbing more media attention; with the likes of MTV, Okay Africa identifying with her talent on their respective platforms. Safe to say she has had quite an incredible entry into the music industry, making quite a significant impact in such a short amount of time.
On June 30, 2017, she once again collaborated with talented producer Bankyonthebeatz, this time creating house rhythm titled Good Loving. The song has become a DJ’s favourite within a short time span and is quickly finding its way to the summer playlists of music lovers across board.
Although her sound resonates with the neo soul genre, her versatility enables her easily switch to other genres such as pop, house and EDM. She has received various comparisons to British-Nigerian icon; Sade Adu.
